Description: A DIY photo booth crafted for a budget-conscious wedding, combining creative technology and cheap materials to capture fleeting “InstaMoments.”
If my sister had her way, the wedding would’ve looked very different.
Lilian was not one to overdo things, always opting for frugality whenever possible. If it were up to her, she’d have signed the paperwork at City Hall, followed it up with a celebratory dinner at a well-reviewed—but affordable—Chinese restaurant. A simple, satisfying meal in good company would’ve sufficed, and most importantly, sidestepped the costly traditions of an American wedding.
But the decision wasn’t hers alone.
Her other half, Thomas, was the sentimental type. For him, weddings signify a new beginning with your life partner—not going big would undermine the relationship. Coming from a large family, his dream wedding included a lively celebration with all his loved ones.
Inevitably, the two needed to compromise.
As a middle ground, Lilian agreed to a ceremony, but only with a strict budget. No spending on nice-to-haves, no photo booth, no open bar—just the essentials for a minimal—but memorable—event.
Thriftiness became the unofficial wedding theme, and a tiger team was formed.
I was recruited to build a photo booth for the wedding, while a family friend brewed homemade beer to be served at the reception by another family friend (aka the free bartender). Together, we helped keep costs low
In keeping with the wedding’s budget-conscious ethos, I built the photo booth from cardboard and craft paper sourced from the dollar store. Its Instagram-inspired design nodded to The Gram while emphasizing its purpose: capturing and sharing memories.
In the end, my sister pulled it off.
There were 110 guests, and she stayed within her budget, even managing to keep it below the California average. Looking back, Lilian remarked that there are only two occasions in life to gather everyone you love: your wedding and your funeral.
For one night, under string lights and laughter, even she couldn’t deny that some moments are worth making an exception for.
